On 20 October 2022, Kennis organised a panel discussion as a side event for the 11th Conference of Parties to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC), titled Assessing impacts of global arms control agreements on armed violence reduction. The event, co-organised with CROSS and the Alliance of NGOs on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice was held at the Vienna International Centre and online.
Synopsis: In recent years, the generation, collection and sharing of firearm violence and armed violence statistics have improved, also supported by the adoption of Target 16.1 of the 2030 Agenda, which aims at a substantive reduction of all forms of violence and related death rates. But while data have become more available, they are not necessarily more understandable or policy-relevant.
This panel discussion will present the status of advancement of a tool to assess the potential armed violence reduction impacts of arms control instruments. The panellists will discuss how the resulting indicators could help States in meeting their commitments in reviewing the implementation of the Firearms Protocol and other global and regional arms control instruments.
